Peterborough, Broadway 2

The Broadway on Broadway, Peterborough was once known as the Broadway Kinema. It was a rival to the Hippodrome and later the Embassy. It remains a cinema to this day.

Peterborough, Broadway 1

The magnificent former Embassy Theatre on Broadway, Peterborough was built in 1937. It was converted to a cinema in the mid 1950’s before being acquired by ABC. Conversion to a multiplex followed in the 1980’s. It was converted to a pub in 1995 and is now Edwards.

Ripley, High Street

The Oxford Hippodrome in High Street Ripley Derbyshire sadly closed in the late 60s. It used to cease showing films for one week in April of each year, to allow the Ripley Co-operative Society’s Amateur Operatic Group to stage their yearly production to sell out audiences.

Salisbury, New Canal 2

No it’s not a Tudor town house, it’s the Odeon Cinema in New Canal, Salisbury. Originally the Gaumont it was built onto the fifteenth century frontage known as ‘The Hall Of John Halle’ and tastefully decorated to a Tudor theme.

The Adelphi in Vicarage Road, Attercliffe, Sheffield is still in use as a club.

Somercotes, Victoria Street

The Electric Theatre in Victoria Street, Somercotes, Derbyshire was one of the earliest cinemas in the country. It is still open as a bingo hall.

Stamford, Broad Street 103

The former Central Cinema in Broad Street Stamford Lincolnshire is a fine example of Art Deco architecture. No longer showing films but still providing entertainment for some of the locals as Browne’s.

The Exchange Theatre in Broad Street Stamford. Built in 1926. It doubles as the premises of the Corn Exchange Theatre Company and offices and showroom for a local auctioneers.

Stockport, Wellington Street South

Stockport’s former Wellington Picture House in Wellington Street South is now Riley’s pool and snooker bar.

Swadlincote, West Street 802

The former New Empire Cinema in West Street, Swadlincote, Derbyshire was built in the 1930s replacing the earlier cinema built in 1912 on the same site. Following closure as a cinema, it was used for bingo and was a gaming centre and play barn until 2007 when it became the Paramount - Smith & Jones Pub. The Paramount was a car which was built a few yards away in High Street during the 1950s. A few examples of this sporty looking vehicle still survive.

Thornton-Cleveleys, Crescent West

The Orion Bingo Hall in Crescent West Thornton-Cleveleys Lancashire served as the towns cinema for many years and it is still possible to arrive for a bingo session on the ubiquitous tram which passes the front of the building.

Walsall, Darwall Street

The former Imperial Theatre in Darwall Street, Walsall has been tastefull refurbished and is now a J D Wetherspoon’s pub. It was built in 1860 and after re-building in 1887 became the St Georges Hall. It became the Imperial Theatre in 1889 and for a short time was a ballroom until it was changed to a cinema in 1910. Conversion to a Bingo hall followed in 1968.

West Bromwich, St Michael's Ringway

This former billiard hall on St Michael’s Ringway, West Bromwich was built in 1913. It is now a Wetherspoon’s pub.

Former cinema in Clarence Yard, Wallgate, Wigan now the Club Nirvana

Former Court Theatre and venue of the Court Cinema in King Street, Wigan is now The Hub.

The Oxford Picture Theatre in Oxford Street Workington Cumbria is now the Henry Bessemer a J D Wetherspoon pub.

The Theatre Royal in Washington Street Workington Cumbria still appears to be functioning for the comunity and is a good state of repair.

Worksop’s former Palais De Danse in Newcastle Avenue Worksop Nottinghamshire is now The Palais Bingo Hall.
