Opened in 1935 it was sold to the Rank Orgaisation in 1955 and renamed the Gaumont. Further changes were made in 1965 when it became the Odeon and converted to a three screen cinema. The Grand Theatre Babbington Lane, Derby was a rival to the Hippodrome in the early part of the 20th century. It closed for variety performances before the Hippodrome and instead became Derby’s premier dance venue becoming at various times the Locarno, Tiffany’s and Mc Cluskey’s. In late 2007 it became Derby’s first eat as much as you like Chinese Restaurant under the banner of May Sum.

PP has informed me that on the evening of 9th February 2008 a fire broke out in the orchestra pit of this old theatre. Thankfully damage was minimised by an original stage curtain, preventing the fire from spreading further. Police are investigating whether the fire was started deliberately. This handsome building, built in 1925 doubled as the village picture house and billiard hall. It is situated on Great North Road, Woodlands near Doncaster in South Yorkshire. Today the Picture House is the Woodlands Bingo Club whilst the Billiard Hall is the Woodlands Snooker Club. This picture was taken just after the smoking ban came into force, hence the reason for the groups of people standing outside both clubs.

Holmefirth is the town where the long running BBC comedy series ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ is filmed and this building is just about opposite Sid’s Cafe.

The Winter Gardens on Marine Road Central, Morecambe, Lancashire is undergoing refurbishment along with many buildings in this once popular holiday resort. Opened in 1897 as the Victoria Pavillion theatre it was the premier venue for entertainment in the town and many famous entertainers have appeared there in summer seasons throughout the years. It fell into decline, like many other seaside venues, when the British public decided to spend their holidays in warmer climes. It is now owned by The Friends of the Winter Gardens, who have some very inflential patrons, and grade II listing has been granted. To learn more about the building’s history and plans for the future, visit the Friends fascinating website at www.thewintergardensmorecambe.co.uk.
