Former Midland Railway, later London Midland & Scottish Railway’s Grain Warehouse No.2 in Borough Street/Derby Street, Burton upon Trent. Now owned by East Staffordshire District Council who repainted the sign in the early 1990’s.

Former Midland Railway, later LMS Bonded Stores and Grain Warehouse No.4 in Derby Road, Burton upon Trent. Still in use as a bonded warehouse.The word Midland has been over painted with LMS.

The Railway Station in Station Road, Buxton has an arched window with the words - LONDON & NORTH WESTERN RAILWAY CO - in the surrounding stonework.

Cardiff, Central Square 1 Cardiff, Central Square 2

Cardiff Central Station was opened in 1850 by the South Wales Railway Company. The SWR was take over by the Great Western Railway who carried out a major rebuild in 1932.

The Victorian clock removed from the original Derby Railway Station has been refurbished and re-sited a few yards away in the station car park. The current building is no improvement on the original.

Huddersfield, St George's Square 1 Huddersfield, St George's Square 3

No it’s not the Parthenon it’s Huddersfield’s railway station in St George’s Square, Huddersfield. Built for the Huddersfield & Manchester Railway & Canal Company in 1848. It remains active today, watched over by the statue of former Prime Minister James ‘Harold’ Wilson a Huddersfield old boy. The station also incorporates two pubs which can be accessed from Platform 1. The coat of arms of the original railway company can be seen at roof level.

Leicester, Great Central Street 1 Leicester, Great Central Street 4

Former Victorian Great Central Railway Station in Great Central Street, Leicester was semi derelict and suffering from neglect and graffiti when photographed. The ornate ceramic tiles over the entrance to the parcels offices show a quality which is sadly lacking in much of today’s architecture. An original iron gate incorporates the Great Central Railway monogram.

The main railway station in Leicester is a fine Victorian structure in London Road, built by the Midland Railway. Although built to accommodate the horse and carriage it still copes with today’s traffic and has so far not succumbed to the modernizers unlike Derby station. The original wrought iron gates incorporate the Midland Railway monogram.

The former Great Central Railway’s warehouse at Brayford Wharf, Lincoln was in a poor state of repair, when photographed. The building was earmarked for refurbishment as flats.

London, Terminus Place

London Victoria railway station was originally opened in 1862 as two stations, one belonging to the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway, serving routes into Sussex and the other belonging to the London, Chatham & Dover Railway, serving routes into Kent. Rebuilt and reopened in 1908 it remained two stations until 1924 when both stations were connected fully.

The former stone built railway station on Marine Drive Central, Morecambe was the ultimate destination for many holiday makers wishing to spend their annual summer leave in this once popular resort. Kids could decamp from the train, cross the road and be on the beach before their parents could say ‘Jack Robinson’. Large hotels and bed and breakfast establishments were within easy walking distance. The building has been converted to a Tourist Information Centre and pub. Midland Railway monograms are found in the stonework above the main entrance and exits.

Another architectural gem is Nottingham’s main railway station in Carrington Street, Nottingham. Rebuilt in 1903 using red brick and terra-cotta faience it incorporates ornate designs which include the Midland Railway’s monogram.

Sheffield Midland railway station was built by the Midland Railway Company in 1870. Located on Sheaf Street it was refurbished between 2002 and 2006 at a cost of around £50m. This impressive project has won a National Rail Award. Built mainly of stone the Victorian concourse has been lovingly restored as well as the platforms and canopies. Original Midland Railway monograms are incorporated into the stone arches. Sheaf Square, with its cascading waterfall and fountains, gives the visitor a wonderfull first impression of the regenerated city.
