Sheffield Co-operative Society Ltd
Sheffield - Angel Street/Castlegate
This 5 storey Portland stone and granite building, know as Castle House was photographed in March 2008, one month before closure of the department store. Opened in 1962 by the Brightside & Carbrook Co-operative Society, it was luxurious and state of the art at the time. The society merged with the Sheffield & Eccleshall Co-operative Society to form Sheffield Co-operative Society Ltd in the 1980s. Recent mergers with United Co-operative and the Co-operative Group has resulted in the decision to concentrate on retail grocery. The concern now is that the premises are too large for retail grocery alone and the future of this site is brought into question.
