Langley Mill & Aldercar Co-operative Society Ltd
Langley Mill - Cromford Road/Dean Street
Former main retail outlets for this small Derbyshire society. The first building from Station Road is of red brick and stone construction. On the Dean Street corner of the building, above the entrance, is a stone tablet with the date 1875. This represents the year when the society was formed. The first floor was used as the Co-op Hall, where meetings and functions were held. A stone strap above the ground floor windows has been crudely chiselled to remove the buildings former identity but the words - LANGLEY MILL & ALDERCAR CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY LIMITED - can still be deciphered. The building is now the Bridge Centre and Cafe. On the opposite corner of Dean Street is another large building which was built in 1915. It is now a snooker and variety club. The full complex housed a shoe shop, grocery, bakery, hardware, furniture, tailoring, ladies ware, drapery, butchers and greengrocery departments as well as the offices. There was a chemist, hairdressers, paint and wallpaper shop, coal wharf, dairy and funeral directors also in close proximity. A truly cradle to grave experience.
