Former shop - now Oxford Court flats - fine stone carving of society’s trademark - GREAT GRIMSBY CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY LIMITED - with a beehive in centre.

Hasland Co-operative Society Ltd

Hasland - Mansfield Road

Now a Midlands Co-op village supermarket, this store was the main outlet for this small Derbyshire society. Two stone carvings at the edge of the ground floor windows have the trade mark wheatsheaf emblem and motto - LABOR AND WAIT.

Fine Victorian 3 storey building housing the Co-operative Hall, Stone tablet above third storey window - HUCKNALL TORKARD INDUSTRIAL PROVIDENT SOCIETY LTD. 1898 - CO-OPERATIVE HALL is incised in stone above entrance door.

Huddersfield & District Co-operative Society Ltd

Huddersfield - New Street/Queensgate

Former Victorian department store with an Art Deco extension built 1936. The word -CO-OPERATIVE - is incorporated into the stonework in the corners of the extension. The Victorian premises built 1886 and extended in 1893/4 is now a Wilkinson’s store but the newer extension has stood empty for some time and is at risk of demolition.

Red brick and stone shop, built 1908, now a carpet and curtain shop. Stone tablets above entrance have the following - H.E.C.S. - 1908.

Ilkeston - South Street

Still a very active society with many travel agents throughout the midlands, their main department store in Ilkeston has - ILKESTON CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY LTD - in the plasterwork above the first floor windows and a stone emblem of a wheatsheaf, spade and sickle with moto - LABOR AND WAIT - high up above a second floor window.

Large Edwardian department store in centre of Ipswich now Ipswich & Norwich Co-operative Society Ltd. Ornate plasterwork on corner of building above second floor windows showing a handshake within a wreath with the words - EACH FOR ALL & ALL FOR EACH 1908. Attached to this building is a slightly newer wing build of cream and brown stone with IPSWICH INDUSTRIAL CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY LIMITED - above first floor windows.

Langley Mill & Aldercar Co-operative Society Ltd

Langley Mill - Cromford Road/Dean Street

Former main retail outlets for this small Derbyshire society. The first building from Station Road is of red brick and stone construction. On the Dean Street corner of the building, above the entrance, is a stone tablet with the date 1875. This represents the year when the society was formed. The first floor was used as the Co-op Hall, where meetings and functions were held. A stone strap above the ground floor windows has been crudely chiselled to remove the buildings former identity but the words - LANGLEY MILL & ALDERCAR CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY LIMITED - can still be deciphered. The building is now the Bridge Centre and Cafe. On the opposite corner of Dean Street is another large building which was built in 1915. It is now a snooker and variety club. The full complex housed a shoe shop, grocery, bakery, hardware, furniture, tailoring, ladies ware, drapery, butchers and greengrocery departments as well as the offices. There was a chemist, hairdressers, paint and wallpaper shop, coal wharf, dairy and funeral directors also in close proximity. A truly cradle to grave experience.

Stone built former society shop, built 1911. Now an art gallery. The original wooden carved LCS motif is still above the entrance and has been tastefully repainted.

Formerly Branch No 1, now the Great Wall Oriental Restaurant. Typical co-op style tiling and lettering, high up on front of the building. Dark green lettering on cream tiles - BRANCH No 1 1926.

Superb Edwardian red brick building with green ceramic window and door surrounds, now a car audio and battery dealer. Three large ceramic tiled plaques at first floor level - MACCLESFIELD EQUITABLE PROVIDENT SOCIETY LTD - FOUNDED 1855 - AD 1903

Mansfield & Worksop Co-operative Society Ltd

Mansfield - Queen Street

Former town centre department store. An Art Deco designed building with a more modern extension built circa 1970. Showing signs of tiredness and in need of refurbishment to the outer structure of the premises. Saved from closure in 2007 when it was acquired by Anglia Regional Co-operative Society Ltd who purchased it from the Co-operative Group (CWS) Ltd. It now carries the Westgate Department Store identity.

Stone built former shop, now private house. Large tablet above former entrance has the wording MIRFIELD INDUSTRIAL CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY LTD - BRANCH No 1 and the bee hive with circulating bees motif.

Former society’s central department store is now an estate agent and hair studio. The wording MIRFIELD INDUSTRIAL can still be seen impressed into the blue wooden boarding above the ground floor windows.
