Former department store with brown ceramic tiles around ground floor windows and door - CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY incorporated in brickwork above first floor windows. Ornate tower with two clocks on top corner of building.

Barnsley British Co-operative Society Ltd

Barnsley - Market Street/Wellington Street

Former department store, now Protemp recruitment. Terra-cotta and turquoise stone and ceramics combine to to create a magnificent piece of architecture which includes a ceramic lion located at the very top above the corner entrance. Also featured are gryphons and male and female heads. Scrolled faience tiles above the entrance make a panel with the words BARNSLEY BRITISH CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY LTD.

Barnsley New Street/Wellington Street

This former department store, now The Chicago Rock Cafe, is another fabulous piece of Victorian architecture. The original stone building features a clock tower and four stone panels, running the length of the Wellington Street side of the building containing the words BRITISH - CO-OPERATIVE two panels appear to have be chiseled flat to remove the wording. On both New Street and Wellington Street there have been additions to the building which contain tall arched windows and ornate oriental styled wrought iron decorations.

Stone built former shop, now converted to offices. Has a beautifully carved tablet above door showing the co-operative bee hive and circulating bees with the words - BRIGHOUSE DISTRICT INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY LTD - BRANCH No 16 - AD 1888.

Red brick and stone department store, built 1915. Carving on top of columns show dates when society was founded - 1882, when store was built - 1915 and a wheatsheaf motif. Now the Coalville department store for Midlands Co-op.

Former branch shop, built 1928 is now split into two businesses. The one occupying the former grocery department is presently a design engineers whilst the former butchery department is a pet centre. The entrance to the former butchery has a mosaic of the society’s monogram - EPICS.
