During my travels around the UK I have come across some interesting ceramic and stone signs advertising the Brewery’s wares. These may be recent and still valid or old and defunct. A selection is show below.

Charrington’s Toby Ales. This plaque is one of a pair at the entrance to the Black Lion and French Horn in Pollen Street, London and dates from the 1930’s.

Greene King Ales plaques which are attached to the lower walls of the company’s pubs are widespread throughout East Anglia. The one in this picture was photographed in Cambridge.

Hall’s Oxford & West Brewery Company Ltd had houses in Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Gloucestershire. There are still many of these plaques to be found at the entrances of their former pubs. This picture was taken outside a pub in Tewkesbury.

This modern ceramic plaque is located by the entrance to the Greyhound on the Market Place, Blandford Forum. The badger is the trademark of Hall & Woodhouse Ltd of Blandford St Mary, Dorset.

West Country Ales plaques were applied to the wall at the entrances of the company’s pubs in the late 1950’s and many can be found throughout Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and the Welsh borders. They still remain on walls long after the pubs have closed and give a clue to the earlier usage of the properties concerned.
